How is Aloe Vera good for your hair?

Over the past year Aloe vera has become a staple in my hair care product arsenal. I use it as an ingredient in my leave-in conditioner and also the base for a moisturizing spray. A Google search of other blogs revealed that quite a number of bloggers have written about and also use aloe vera as a hair care product.

Research on the Aloe vera plant has revealed that it is a useful resource for humans because of the presence of polysaccharides, mannans, anthraquinones, and lectins. However, the scientific evidence for the cosmetic use of Aloe vera and can be contradicting at times. But, when you think about it - so many of the regimens/recipes in the natural hair world lack research.

As for hair use, Aloe vera is said to be preferred by vegans for the re-twisting of locs. Also, Aloe vera has been experimented with for the use as a base for a hair cleanser that does not strip natural oils from the hair. On eHow there are a few articles about the use of Aloe vera for treating hair loss and promoting hair growth.

Are you using Aloe vera juice or gel? How so?

  1. I use it in my leave-in... HEHH + aloe vera juice + olive oil + optional EO = FAB hair for me. :D

There are some products online (Terre-something) that use aloe vera and clay in their cleansers... never tried them though, but now I'm wondering about it. Hmmm...

  2. I use it in aloe gro (thanks for the recipe & speaking about it many months ago). I also use it prior to applying my moisturizer and/or styler on cleanse day. I've used it in a daily moisturizing spritz I made as well as add it my ayurvedic powders. I think it helps with my porosity issues on certain areas of my head.

  3. I love aloe vera gel, growing up I didn't use it for hair though. It's great for healing the wounds on the skin and for even cooling down the eczema on my skin. My grandmother also used it on our tongues if we used inappropriate language as child lol.

  4. ooooh! I LOVE it! I use it on my daughter's hair - I probably read about it first from you! lol! Anyway, I haven't researched it much yet - I just heard about it a few times and thought I'd try it. I first used it as a leave in - which made her hair super soft, but partway through the day it felt drier than ever.

Then I used it as a leave in AND sealed with a light oil or hemp butter = wonderful! Soft, supple, her hair looks and feels great.

Now, I also add it to her hair when detangling! I don't use a lot of detanglers, but I like aloe vera juice, it's slipperier than just water and I don't make her hair look greasy if I use too much.

lol - apparenlty I should do my own post on the topic some day! I seem to have a lot to say about it! :D

Thank you for all the links! I'll be sure to check them out!
